National Archaeological Museum of Athens with Eronat.Net ๐๐ October 23, 2024October 23, 2024 cenk 0 Comments Statuette of Ephesian Artemis, made of pentelic marble. Unknown provenance. In her temple at Ephesos, Asia Minor, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, Artemis was worshipped by the Greeks as the great goddess of nature and patron goddess of animals. Her dress is adorned by fertility symbols (28 breasts), figures of Nike, griffins, sphinxes and bees. Lions sit on the goddessโs arms. More info ๐ Cenk Eronat cenk@tutkutours.com The figure is identified either with Perseus holding the head of Medusa in his right hand or more possibly with Paris holding the Apple of Discord to give it to the most beautiful of the goddesses, Aphrodite. The tradition of Polykleitos is evident in the whole structure of the figure and the intense musculature. The attribution of the statue to a specific artist finds the scholars divided. An artist from the circle of the Parian sculptor Skopas, or the Corinthian sculptor Euphranor are among the candidates. At any rate, the majority of scholars, in considering the โAntikythera Youthโ as a work of the Argive-Sicyonian school of successors to Polykleitos, are inclined to attribute it to the Sicyonian Kleon. 340 – 330 BC. www.eronat.net Relief dedicated to the Nymphs by Agathemeros.
